Hand colouring or ‘tinting’ has been around since the birth of photography. In the past, black and white photographic images were over-painted with brushes to produce a colour effect. These days, this process is done digitally, using Adobe Photoshop. Your image is scanned in and colour is applied within selected areas of the digital version of your photograph.
Hand Coloured Image By James Middleton
This sample image was carefully repaired and hand tinted. Research was conducted to ensure that the uniforms within the photograph were correctly coloured. The colour of the eyes and skin can be assumed based upon the tonal values within the black and white image.
