Typing Inside a shape

You can create a shape from custom shapes then type text inside the shape, finally, remove the shape you first started with and the text remains in that shape on your canvas.

  1. Open a picture, or, if you like, a blank canvas, Ctrl N, then OK.
  2. Select the custom shape tool and choose one of the shapes from the drop-down shapes available in the contextual bar, just below the menu bar item Help, click the down arrow and select a shape, say, for example a heart, and draw it out on your page. It will then fill with the colour you have chosen in the colour bar on the right of the contextual bar. You can, of course, change it after you have typed your text just by highlighting the text then selecting another colour.
  3. When you have drawn out your shape select the type tool and click within the shape you have selected, a bounding box will appear, now, all you have to do is type and your text will follow the original shape you drew out on your canvas. When you have finished select the move tool, then select the first item you placed on the canvas, if it was a heart or whatever, delete it, and you will be left with the text you typed within the bounding box but following the shape of your selected item. If you want to alter the colour of the text first select that layer in the layers pallet, then the text tool and highlight the text, then click on the colour selector on the right of the contextual bar at the top right. (Just below the menu bar but over to the right. Select your colour.
  4. At this stage you can also change the font and the font size if you have not already selected it beforehand. In addition you can draw out the bounding box to make it larger or smaller.

Give it a try, you might find it useful. You could even add a colour to the area outside your shape and have the shape a lighter pastel colour, it's up to you, you may want to type a few special words in a special shape for that someone special.
