To Change the Colour of a single item within a picture

By John Sweeney - 16th of January 2007

Let's say you have a single item in a picture and you want to change it's colour, how do you do it, for example change a red car to a blue one.
Follow the instructions and you will see that all things are possible in Photoshop.

  1. Open the image in Photoshop.
  2. Enlarge the image by holding down the Ctrl and Alt buttons, on your keyboard and press the plus sign on the numbers key pad to the right of your keyboard. (Pressing the minus key will have the opposing effect)
  3. Select round the item on which you want to change colour with the polygonal lasso tool until dots appear all the way round and appear like marching ants. (Constantly moving lines).
  4. Go to Image then Adjustments then Hue and Saturation, the Hue and Saturation box with sliders opens up.
  5. Move the top 2 sliders to suit, when you have achieved the desired result Hit Ctrl D (To de-select).
  6. Now close and save the image. (New name again so as to save the original image).

NB. This also works on many areas of pictures that you might want to enhance, i.e. grass, mountains etc, so, give it a try.
