Straighten the horizon on your picture(s)

By John Sweeney - 16th of January 2007

Have you ever wondered how you can make a horizon in one or more of your pictures straight and level. Well, it's really not too difficult.
You can measure just how mush your horizon is tilted, no guessing required, and with a little tip you can rotate your image so that the horizon is perfectly horizontal.

  1. Open your picture in photoshop.
  2. On your toolbar there is a measure tool (I (The letter I (EYE) )on your keyboard, use shift I to scroll through until you find it or click the corner icon on the eye dropper tool, which is located in the right hand column just above the zoom tool).
  3. Just draw the measure tool out along the horizon line, whilst holding down the left mouse button, then release it when you have drawn a line.
  4. Go to Image, Rotate Canvas, then Arbitrary, when you reach the Arbitrary command a little box will appear to show just how much out of line your horizon is, click OK and the picture will rotate the required amount and you should have a straight horizon on your picture. Of course you may now have a problem that parts of your picture no longer fit inside the frame or there are a couple or more blank corners, to correct this use the crop tool and crop the area as mush as you are able to and the job's done, you should now have a perfectly aligned picture.
