Placing a coloured border round a picture

Sometimes it's nice to finish off a picture by putting a small, or indeed large, border round a picture, it can be any colour you like. In version 7 or before the colour you get is chosen by whichever colour is uppermost or in the foreground on the toolbar, usually black or white, so, if you want another foreground colour you must first click on the foreground colour and change it.

In CS and CS 2 you get the choice later.

  1. Open your picture in Photoshop.
  2. Go to Image then Canvas Size, a new pallet opens up, in which it gives various information relating to the open picture. On the top area it gives the current size and in the middle portion it gives the new size, this is because this is also the instrument with which to change the size of your images. Just below the middle there is a small box with the word relative next to it, tick that box and you will see the size boxes now have a zero where the width and height sizes used to be. It matters not whether sizes are in cm or pixels or inches. In each of those boxes put the figure 3 or if you like a bigger border the figure 5.
  3. At the bottom of that pallet you will be given the option of what colour you want your border to be, make whatever selection you want.
  4. When you are satisfied click OK and the pallet closes and hey presto your picture has a nice border round it. It is very difficult to know exactly how large the border will be for any given number because your pictures may be bigger or smaller than anyone else's, a bit of trial and error is the order of the day. Have a go at it and see how you like it.
  5. Now save your picture, and, remember, give it a name other than the one it had when you first opened it.
