Colour Image - Greyscale - Return colour to parts

By John Sweeney - 16th of January 2007

How to turn a colour image to Black and White or Greyscale and then bring the colour back in one or two items.

  1. Open a colour image.
  2. Make a copy of it on the layers pallet (F7) and leave the background copy selected.
  3. Hit Ctrl Shift U and the image will become greyscale.
  4. Select the history brush tool from the toolbar (y on your keyboard).
  5. Now hold down your left mouse button and move the brush over the item or person you want to re-colour and hey presto your work of art appears. Remember, you can change the size of your brush on the keyboard by selecting the square brackets just to the right of the letter P on your keyboard.
  6. Now flatten the image and save it with a new name. Looks good don't it ?
